Culinary Resources
There are plenty of great sites out there. In no way could we ever find them all. Send us your favorite, and we will get it posted.
Feast on the Cheap – Mary Anne Rittenhouse has a great blog comprised of incredible recipes and costs involved with each. She has given us a great opportunity to feature her blog on our site which you check out by clicking on Feast On The Cheap at right.
CDKitchen – an incredible source of recipes, cooking articles and kitchen help. Been around 14 years, so you can’t go wrong.
Austin Urban Gardens – Specializing in outdoor gardening and organic growing right here in Austin. They offer an amazing array of planters and gardening knowledge!
Austin Farmers Market – Open Saturdays 9-1 at 4th and Guadalupe, and Wednesdays 4-8 at 46th and Lamar
Sunset Valley Farmers Market – Saturdays 9-1, 3200 Jones Road behind Tony Berger Center
Georgetown Farmers Markets – Open April to November on Thursdays (Weather Permitting) 3:30-6:30 at 300 E. Morrow St.
Round Rock Farmers Market – Open Saturdays from April to July 8 to Noon in the City Hall Parking Garage at 200 E. Bagdad Ave.
Capital Area Food Bank – There are a wealth of events that help out those in need, or you can offer a donation directly on their site. Every little bit helps.
Recipe Zaar – A great site that has lots of contributions from its members. The ability to search the database by ingredient, cuisine, etc. is a great feature.
Food TV – This one is a no-brainer. Been watching this channel since it hit cable. Alton Brown has been my favorite for about 10 years. Alton, waiting for a new season, man! (Like he would read this.) All that aside, the main reason I like this site is because of sheer volume of recipes and the search capabilities are un-equaled.
Central Market – When we didn’t live in Austin, this was a must-do stopover when we did come to town. The site offers access to the eFoodie Newsletter which is a great source for specials, recipes and notification of when that Next Big Chef rolls into town (I was pissed when I heard Mario Batali had been here and I missed it). They will also send you members-only coupons in the mail, which are always good deals.
Whole Foods – Another favorite of the Austin area (and a slew of other places as well). I honestly have not spent much time here, although I do enjoy their organic vegetables.
Faraday’s – This is a great place in Lakeway to find any equipment you need for cooking. They also provide a mailer which gives updates on their cooking classes, knife sharpening and other offerings.
Restaurant Supply – Another great place to find what you are looking for when shopping for gear on the cheap. There are several great places around the city. Whether you need a few glasses for a party, or several mini-ramekins for a dinner party. Great deals! I love my $20 non-stick pan for omelets and eggs of any sort.
101 Cookbooks – This is one I just recently found. Best part is, it has a specific site for iPhone if you (like me) are in love with the iPhone. Not an app, just a page which is at http://www.101cookbooks.com/iphonerecipes/
Epicurious – This site has a great mailer, RSS and mobile sites with some quick and easy ideas. Also searchable, although not in as much detail as Food Network’s site, it does have some unique search criterion.
Tagines.com – Although I also listed this site on another page, it offers great spices and spice mixes. Ras El Hanout is one of my favorite spice blends for pork or lamb.
World Spice Merchants – I started visiting this location in Seattle in the early ’90s. It is simply amazing to walk into. Been a while since I have been there physically, but their spices are second to none. I would only recommend ordering smaller packages of each spice (depending on your usage) because all spices have a shelf life. Place an order for several at a time.

I’m really liking the new(ish) format of the site Aaron. Well done.

Thanks! It is so much easier to maintain and contribute to.
