Steaming bowl of Pho.
I am not sure what is fueling my recent addiction to Asian food. Perhaps it is the 4+ years that I spent in the area, living in Sydney and spending a majority of my time traveling among various Asian countries from China to Singapore and many places in between. But it’s there, and I love it. And, I can’t find enough of it in Austin. Each time I try, I find a new wonderful restaurant, furthering my conviction that Austin is a food town to be reckoned with.
If you follow us on Twitter, then you know that todays lunch was enjoyed at Kim Phung just East of Lakeline Mall. It has been a long while since I have enjoyed authentic Vietnamese cuisine and I was treated to quite the meal.

I started with a Soft Spring Roll filled with Roast Duck, Vegetables and Vermicelli served with a peanut sauce that was delicious. Along with that was a Vietnamese Fried Egg Roll stuffed with pork and shrimp that was the equal of the previous roll. Served with Fish Sauce it was a wonderful compliment. Very refreshing. But the best was yet to come.
For my main, I chose Pho. That delectable dish, a collaboration between meat, noodle, herb and spice covered by a broth that has been brewing for a millennia I have to say, that the master broth was the treat here. The portions were overwhelming, especially considering the rolls that I had previously consumed. The bowl was as large as my head, which, as those that have met me can attest, is sizable. But, adding the accouterment of herbs and sprouts that preceded the dish, along with an additional helping of Sriracha was a wealth of heat that I needed.

Normally, I am used to enjoying my Pho street-side, the heat of the air and humidity minimized by the heat of the Pho. The sweat generated by both to cool me in the warm climates. But I must admit that Kim Phung, and their wonderful treats allowed me an air conditioned climate to bring back memories of food stalls from across the Pacific. Completely, a wonderfully enjoyable experience.
