‘Crack Sauce’ and the best Taco

First of all, I owe an apology.  I have been repeatedly (and painfully) reminded over the past couple of weeks that I have not provided any updates of late.

To those that enjoy reading this blog, I offer my sincerest apologies.  My day job is entering it’s final weeks of the fiscal year, and attempting to bring in sales has proved to keep me busy of late.  Even while burning ‘vacation’ time, I find myself on the phone trying to solve customer issues and bring in revenue.

To those that do not enjoy reading my blog, I also offer my sincerest apologies.  My lack of written word has deprived you of the self-flagellation to which you subject yourself on a regular basis.  I promise to provide you, as regularly as possible, material that will support your irritation.  Oh, and may I suggest therapy?

Although it seems almost cliche to write about a group that has received so many acclamations in the past, I feel compelled to contribute to the accolades.  I have recently been introduced to Taco Nirvana.  Austin’s own Taco Deli offers many different levels of this experience I cannot even hazard a guess at the combinations that can offer this up.  After many recommendations from my friends on Twitter (specifically Gardens123).

Crack Sauce

I took the opportunity to enjoy this local spot over the long weekend.  I could not have made a wiser choice (nor been given a better recommendation).  My first target was a concoction that has become affectionately called ‘Crack Sauce’ by a few of us on Twitter.  This is what initially drew me to Taco Deli.  It has been called ‘Crack Sauce’ due to its addictive qualities, and it is fair to say I became addicted at first taste.  I spotted the distribution center when I first entered and eyed the sauce called Dona sitting in its icy bath alongside several other sauces.  Although I had to order (amidst a medium sized line of other patrons), I was torn between sneaking a taste and choosing what I would enjoy it with.  Ultimately, I focused on the menu and placed my order for a Frontera Fundido Taco (their signature) and the somewhat more off-beat Puerco Borracho.

Having placed my order and paid, I quickly headed toward the sauce bin, salivating with each press of the handle.  Heading to the table, I ventured a quick taste of the sauce and stopped in my tracks.  While, I am sure, people stared at my odd behavior, I savored every bit of the creamy green mixture.  It’s heat was not immediately noticeable, but was instead smooth and delectable.  The green surprise, indeed!

Having found my table (and sneaking a couple more tastes of the sauce) my food was delivered more promptly than I expected.  The size of the tacos were impressive to say the least, well worth the cost of admission.  And the smell was intoxicating.  I spread the ‘Crack Sauce’ liberally over the first of my Taco Deli experiences and stopped for a moment before eating.  I was well rewarded on the first bite.

Unlike many sauces, Dona does not dominate the flavor.  It mingles and enhances it, filling the meat with additional flavor and adding a following bite.  The spice soon follows and enhances the overall flavor of the dish.

As for the Frontera Fundido, it was the best Taco I have ever had, and I have enjoyed many.  The Puerco Borracho was also delicious and deserves a review of its own.

‘Crack Sauce’ (Dona) is an addiction that I fully mean to feed.  In fact, I plan to do so tomorrow.  Next it will be on the El Pollo Rico (a further suggestion from Gardens123).
